Mahtomedi has state qualifiers in 10 sports after a successful Section 4A meet Saturday at John Glenn Middle School in Maplewood.
“It was a great game,” coach Mike Goldman said. “We had a group of athletes who set six school records and qualified for state in 10 of 12 events, all but the 100 butterfly and 500 free.”
The Zephyrs finished third out of 10 teams behind the Visitation and Cretin-Durham Hall.
Abigail Wright took sole first place in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 51.52 seconds behind Mahatomedi and second in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:53.16. She lowered her grades in each school.
Alix Fox placed second in diving with 324.15 points. Additionally, the 400m freestyle relay of Delaney Dumarmas, Sydney Recigeusi, Emerson Buckley, and Wright also broke a school record by taking second place with a time of 3 minutes, 38.52 seconds.
The top two finishers automatically advanced to state. He competed in one of the most competitive Class 1A sections, and the Zephyrs earned standard berths in his other six events.
Third place was breaststroker Audrey Carlson (1:08.96). Medley relay, 3rd place, Buckley, Carlson, Maddie Rappel, Delaney (1:51.99, school record). 3rd place in 200 freestyle relay, Rappel, Addie Miller, Dumelmuth, Wright (1:40.04, school record); Dumelmuth, 4th, 50 freestyle (24.88). Buckley placed fourth in the individual medley (2:15.28) and fifth in the backstroke (1:00.14, a school record).
“This is Mahtomedi’s most state berths in school history,” Goldman said. “I am proud of the efforts of each and every one of us.”
The state tournament will be held at the University of Minnesota from November 16th to 18th.
