Just after 7 a.m., police were called to a 911 call about children left alone in an unlocked car in a Walmart parking lot on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow.
Police found two girls, ages 2 and 7, and two boys, ages 3 and 5, without their mother inside the vehicle. Officers opened the car and called an ambulance to transport the children for testing. Police said the children were released to foster care services.
The children’s mother, Ilana Rios, 26, of Philadelphia, was arrested at the scene. She was in police custody and her arraignment was scheduled for Monday in First District Court in Hempstead. An attorney for Mr. Rios is not listed.
