WILLIAMSBURG — A no-bag policy and enhanced safety measures at public high school athletic events will go into effect at WJCC schools on Wednesday, Jan. 3.
The new policy, announced in December, is described by WJCC Schools as a proactive measure and not introduced in response to any specific threat or incident.
“We simply want to maintain the safest atmosphere possible. We will extend this practice to non-athletic public events in the new year to further enhance the safety of family and community gatherings.” “We plan to do so,” the WJCC schools said in an announcement on their website.
The following policies will go into effect on January 3rd.
- No baggage policy: Bags of any size (backpacks, wallets, totes, camera bags, etc.) are not permitted. Baggage must be returned to the vehicle before attending the event. School principals will direct students to participate in or attend events immediately after school, as appropriate.
- Weapon detector: All guests pass through a weapons detection gate similar to those used at Busch Gardens, sporting events, concerts, and more. The department uses metal detectors at large events and plans to expand implementation in the new year.
WJCC Schools has warned that those planning to attend sporting events in 2024 should keep the following in mind:
- Bags are not allowed. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on medical/personal care needs.
- Guests who leave the event and wish to re-enter will be subject to repeated security screening.
