The possibility of strong storms heading toward Connecticut on Sunday is raising concerns about whether the state’s winter outdoor events can be held this weekend.
Hartford’s Winterfest has seen strong support so far this year, with only one day canceled due to inclement weather.
“We’re hoping it doesn’t rain on Sunday until the afternoon of May 6th,” said Winterfest’s Jackie Mandyk.
She said they’ll be learning to skate with local mascots on Sunday, and Santa will also be flying in from the North Pole. However, with strong winds and heavy rain expected, it is unclear what kind of events will occur.
“It’s much better to skate than swim here in Bushnell Park in December, so if it starts to rain or start raining, we’ll cancel,” Mandick said.
Eversource has also started preparations and is trying to prepare for any damage.
“We have activated our emergency response plan and deployed sufficient resources to prepare for the storm,” said Eversource’s Steve Sullivan.
He said the company has added line workers, tree workers and electricians. They are ready to respond to damage in the immediate aftermath of a storm.
“While we are well prepared for this storm and have many crews in place, power outages are still inevitable,” Sullivan said.
Back in Hartford, Winterfest organizers hope the rainy weather doesn’t spoil the Grinch’s holiday spirit.
We don’t care if it’s 60 degrees a day, but if it’s 60 degrees for a few days, or 60 degrees for a few days, and then we get rain that really damages the ice. “I’m worried about it happening,” Mandic said. “I encourage them to bring their umbrellas and see Santa, go to the merry-go-round, go to restaurants and enjoy other things going on in downtown Hartford.”
