CHARLOTTE — Add a women’s major championship to the list of professional golf events that could be held in Charlotte within the next decade.
It’s the latest wrinkle in speculation about where the city’s golf ambitions will go next. For now, that ambition is on hold due to continued uncertainty surrounding the PGA Tour’s planned merger with Saudi-owned LIV Golf.
Andrea Smith, co-chair of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, told CBJ in a new interview that the overall growth in women’s sports makes the region ripe for consideration, including hosting the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
The event moves to a different course each year, as does the Men’s PGA Championship, which was held here in 2017 and will return in 2025.
