Walmart Inc. plans to open its fifth “next generation” fulfillment center in Stockton, California, in 2026.
Walmart (NYSE:WMT) said in an announcement Thursday that the 900,000-square-foot facility, located about 80 miles south of Sacramento, will allow the retailer to process online orders faster and more efficiently across the West Coast. Ta.
The Stockton fulfillment center will also increase its ability to fulfill Walmart.com orders, the company said.
The facility features an automated high-density storage and retrieval system that streamlines a manual 12-step process to just five steps. The new technology will double storage capacity, allow Walmart to process twice the number of customer orders it can fulfill in a day, and expand next-day and next-day delivery to Walmart customers, the company said. .
“The announcement of our high-tech fulfillment center in Stockton marks another significant step forward in our omnichannel retail efforts,” said Karisa Sprague, senior vice president of fulfillment network operations at Walmart US. said in a statement. “In response to growing customer demand for online shopping, we are introducing technology to improve delivery speed and accuracy for Walmart customers.”
By combining next-generation fulfillment centers like the Stockton facility with the rest of Walmart’s fulfillment network, retailers will be able to serve 95% of the U.S. population with next-day or two-day shipping. Walmart Fulfillment Services, Walmart’s end-to-end third-party fulfillment service, will also leverage this space to fulfill third-party marketplace products.
Walmart says it plans to hire more than 1,000 workers at the center.
The first location will open in Joliet, Illinois in summer 2022, serving customers in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. In addition to the recently opened facility in McCordsville, Indiana, another facility is scheduled to open in Lancaster, Texas. and Greencastle, Pennsylvania.
