It’s alarming to see pounds of food waste, and one Walmart shopper was shocked to see perfectly good food packed into a cart outside one store. Ta.
The video, shared on TikTok by @tio.silverfox, shows a row of carts full of food. Products included hot dogs, lunchables, coffee creamer, cheese, and bacon.
The user noticed that the transformer was knocked over and this explains why the refrigerator system stopped working. “It’s a sad day,” he said. Looks like the store just emptied the fridge and left all the food outside.
To donate food safely, it must be stored at the correct temperature to prevent spoilage. The food featured in this video may not have been able to be transported to a food bank or collection center and had to be discarded for food safety reasons.
Walmart isn’t the only chain experiencing this predicament. One user posted a video of a similar situation outside a Target store after the power went out.
While it’s impossible to predict freak accidents or weather events that will cause stores to throw away large amounts of food, it is possible to create a plan to route food to where it is needed. For example, a Kroger in Arkansas donated 60,000 meals to local food banks after a power outage knocked out their refrigerators. Other stores, such as Trader Joe’s, are offering free food to customers after power outages.
Users in the comments section were shocked by the amount of food waste. “[It’s] billion dollar company [and] They don’t have backup generators,” one user pointed out.
Other users pointed to the financial impact of the company incurring financial losses instead of donating food. Another user explained: “It’s a loss for them. They have insurance that will pay for it.”
