For many people, holiday shopping is fun, filled with decorations, music, and twinkling lights. But for those with sensory sensitivities, it can all be a little overwhelming.
That’s why Walmart announced it will set aside two hours each morning to make all of its stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico more friendly and inclusive for such sensitive populations.
During the back-to-school season, the company created a less stimulating environment for shoppers for a few hours every Saturday. A static image was displayed on the electronic television wall, the radio was turned off, and the lights were turned down as much as possible.

The company says feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
Now, these sensory-friendly changes are back every morning from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. However, this time there is no end date.
“We hope our stores will be a little easier to see and hear for our customers and associates during these hours,” Walmart said in an announcement on its website. “These changes are thanks to people sharing their feedback on how their store helps them feel like they belong.”
The company says the changes aren’t just about providing a better experience for shoppers. Salespeople with ADHD, anxiety, or those on the autism spectrum also said they appreciated the calm atmosphere.
“Several employees have expressed a desire to continue this program year-round,” Walmart store manager Tyler Morgan told the company. “We have employees with autism, ADHD, etc., and one employee commented that this was the first time the company had done something for them. During the stressful holiday season, I hope this program continues because I think everyone can calm down a little bit.”
The company told CNN that the change is currently only planned for Walmart retail stores, not Sam’s Club stores.
