REPUBLIC, Mo. (KY3) — Another major development is underway in Republic: Walmart plans to build a pharmaceutical distribution warehouse near the city's Amazon fulfillment center.
During Tuesday night's Republic City Council meeting, it was revealed the warehouse will be built at the intersection of State Highway MM and Sawyer Road within the Hankins Farms planned development area.
Derek Lee of Lee Engineering and Associates in Springfield represented Walmart at Tuesday's meeting. He told city council members that the warehouse, its second in the country, will ship goods across the U.S. He said construction will move forward quickly.
“They purchased the land last week. Construction will begin this week. We received the clearance permit yesterday. We have everything set up and we're just waiting for the land to actually be purchased. So if you get there within the next week, you'll see the whole site cleared,” Lee said.
The measure was presented to the City Council as part of an agreement between Walmart and the city of Republic. The city will build a fire hydrant and about 1,200 feet of water main on the site, and the developer will reimburse the city for materials and equipment used in construction. The City Council is expected to vote on the measure within two weeks.
Republic Community Development Director Karen Haynes told city council members the warehouse “will be the first of several major economic development projects and job centers in the area.”
