Walmart on Friday joined the growing list of companies that have pulled advertising from X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
“We do not advertise on X because we believe it is easier to reach our customers on other platforms,” Walmart said in an emailed statement to The Hill.
Walmart’s emailed statement comes two days after X owner Elon Musk told companies trying to remove their ads from the platform to “step away from themselves.” When New York Times financial columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin asked Musk at the magazine’s Dealbook Summit if he didn’t want companies to advertise, Musk replied: What if someone tries to blackmail me with an ad? Blackmail me with money? Leave yourself. ”
Musk faced backlash last month after appearing to support anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. The day after the tweet, Media Matters for America announced it had found ads for companies like Oracle, Apple, Bravo, and Xfinity on the platform next to posts glorifying the Nazi Party and Adolf Hitler, and the companies themselves was also criticized.
Companies including Apple and Disney announced they would remove ads from their platforms after Mr. Musk appeared to endorse anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and Media Matters findings.
Musk denied the anti-Semitic claims, saying:[n]Nothing could be further from the truth. ”
“I want nothing but what’s best for humanity and a prosperous and exciting future for everyone,” Musk continued in his post on X.
