A Walmart shopper apparently joked about stealing items while using the self-checkout system.
This clip from Jierry Cosmeus (@jeffycos21) has racked up 1.7 million views, with many commenters blaming theft on why so many Walmart stores are closing, with some Some said they felt the need to shoplift because the cost of living was so high. The United States has become.
Cosmeas said in a text overlay on her TikTok:i am my [poop emoji] I put it back in my cart and took the $$ to the self checkout. Total $34.72. ā
“Self-checkout never fails…” he added in the caption.
Commenters reacting to his video show Walmart shoppers applying old-fashioned five-finger discounts to themselves as they scan (or don’t scan) items at self-checkout. I had different opinions about it. One person said this type of behavior is the reason many Walmart stores are closing.of daily mail reported that 17 stores in nine states, including four in Chicago, will be closed by the retailer due to an increase in shoplifting.
One person said, “You can’t afford not to scan something.”
But some joked that not having to scan items at the self-checkout allowed them to plan their own vacation. “Self-checkout paid enough to go to Disney World!” one person exclaimed.
“Right!! There’s even more room when you self-checkout!! It’s Walmart,” another joked.
Cosmeus apparently said the above comment was a joke, as he wrote that some people on the platform take his posts too seriously. “Thank you, some people here think everything is true, it’s tiktok,” he shared.
But another said that given the current state of the U.S. economy, stealing goods from retailers has become a necessary evil for retailers. Inflation in the United States has reportedly reached its highest level in 41 years. “LOL, I got the money, but I still have to make sure he doesn’t scan at least 1-2 items from a full cart. In my mind, that way I avoid inflation and taxes.” ā, the user shared.

In December 2022, CNBC reported that Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said the chain’s high number of thefts could ultimately lead to store closures and price hikes. According to reports, multiple shoppers have complained online about the latter.
Walmart has also taken a strong stance against theft in recent years. Store employees highlighted some of the anti-theft technology installed in self-checkout areas, including the installation of cameras to record transactions. Shoppers are also warned not to skip scanning items at self-checkouts after being caught themselves.
