The Town of Argyle released a statement Friday saying it has abandoned plans for a Walmart location in Heath Tract at the northeast corner of FM 407 and I-35W.
“After careful consideration, Walmart has decided to terminate its concession agreement with a local developer for the proposed site at FM 407 and I-35W. “This means that things will not proceed as planned,” the statement said.
“We believe that the current state of Walmart is directly related to the efforts and voices of our community. I’m lucky to have such a community.
“We know that thoughtful future development is key to our town’s growth and success, so we encourage our residents to continue to share their thoughts and ideas with us about our commercial corridors. The Town Council, City Development District Commission, and staff remain steadfastly committed to working with and supporting local developers to bring ideal businesses to our unique and attractive town. To go.”
In response to increased inquiries regarding commercial development along Argyle’s I-35W corridor, the Argyle City Council recently adopted an ordinance requiring special use permits for buildings larger than 40,000 square feet within the corridor. All “big box” applications, like Walmart’s, must go through a public hearing process and a vote before P&Z and the council.
Developers of the 240-acre Heath Tract said at a public meeting in 2022 that they want to build large-format stores, housing, offices and restaurants on the site. But for now, it’s back to square one.
