A lawyer revealed that Walmart shoppers’ reaction after being asked to show their receipts was understandable.
Wholesalers such as Sam’s Club regularly conduct incoming inspections, but Americans are outraged by the way non-affiliated stores are being inspected.
The checks have sparked outrage among shoppers who fear workers will accuse them of theft.
Attorney Steve Lehto said in a YouTube video that he understands why there is a perception among shoppers that they don’t feel trusted.
He recommends how customers eligible for receipt checks should handle this situation.
Shoppers shouldn’t start thinking about constitutional issues, Leto said.

He added: “The first thing you have to realize is that this store is a private organization, not a government entity.
“So a lot of people want to start thinking in terms of constitutional issues.”

Lehto warned that even if shoppers complained about the measures, they might not achieve much.
“If you say, ‘We think this is bad business for you guys,’ they’ll say, ‘We’re also interested in keeping costs down and eliminating inventory shrinkage,'” he said. .
“If you haven’t stolen anything, congratulations. But we’re trying to help you.”
Lehto said shoppers at members’ clubs risk having their subscriptions canceled if they don’t comply.
He said customers need to consider which is more important: righteous indignation versus membership retention and saving money.
Lehto said Walmart employees have the right to ask shoppers for proof of receipt, but they cannot discriminate.
He added, “Then the question becomes, “Do you really want to stand up for that position and become the person you’re fighting against?”
Lehto isn’t the only lawyer to warn that staff could become suspicious if shoppers don’t produce their receipts when asked.
According to local CBS affiliate WLNS-TV, attorney Brian Waldman said store employees may have more reason to believe they are committing a crime if the shopper refuses to produce the slip. He said no.
Receipt checks in some stores haven’t stopped shoppers from sharing ways to circumvent them.
