A supermarket news report last month detailed Walmart’s recent partnership with Google-owned drone delivery company Wing, which focused on the Dallas area and added drone delivery capabilities to about 60,000 homes. A second supercenter could open in the area early this year, following Wing Supercenter in Frisco, Texas.
Wing Chief Financial Officer Shannon Nash said deliveries typically take less than 30 minutes, with some deliveries taking as little as three minutes. He added that a recent survey revealed that 43% of consumers cited last-minute grocery shopping as the most common reason for an unplanned car trip. Approximately 74% of consumers said they are interested in exploring ways to use high-speed delivery by drone to eliminate these impromptu trips. However, this service is still limited to small items. It’s not full-fledged grocery shopping. Wing says its drones can currently carry just under 3 pounds and fly at speeds of up to 100 km/h.
Nash said Wing’s drone deliveries have a much lower carbon footprint than ground delivery vehicles. Approximately half of survey respondents expressed concerns about the personal impact on the environment of shopping in person or accessing products through internet distribution services.
