WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Visit Wichita is boosting the local economy with all the events it has planned for 2024.
“Every year, including last year, tourism brings $1.5 billion into our economy here in Wichita, which is great,” said Jemel Holopilek, director of communications for Visit Wichita. “We hope to exceed that this year.”
She said Visit Wichita’s sports teams are working hard.
“The U.S. Figure Skating Championships coming up at the end of January brings in about $2.5 million just for that championship,” Holopilek said.
Facilities like Intrust Bank Arena and Stryker Sports Complex help Wichita host such events, she said.
“The more people that come here – teams, players, coaches – the more they use our venues, go to restaurants, stay in hotels, the more money they make.” Holopilek said.
She does say that what Wichita is missing out on is conventions, as other surrounding major cities have better centers.
“At the moment, the conference remains as it has been for two centuries, but we are improving, expanding and renovating some areas to make it more state-of-the-art and more accessible to people who come to conferences and conventions.” said Holopilek. .
