The Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “Dark History III: Black Widows and the Devil’s Luck of Penn’s Woods,” on Monday, Oct. 23, at 6:45 p.m. Jennifer Green, director of education at the Chester County History Center, will be the presenter. This program, his third in the History Center’s “Dark History” series, features true stories of misfortune in southeastern Pennsylvania. Explore a mysterious shipwreck with ties to Pennsylvania and the Toxic Syndicate, a criminal organization that may have killed over 100 people. Learn how mental illness and abuse drove two local women, 75 years apart, to commit the worst crime imaginable. WARNING: This presentation contains discussion of violence against adults and children. The Phoenixville Public Library will host Medicare Open Enrollment Assistance appointments with PA-MEDI Counselors on Wednesdays from October 25th to December 6th (excluding November 22nd) during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period . Choosing Medicare can be difficult. PA-MEDI makes choosing Medicare easier by providing support with only your interests in mind. PA-MEDI is a state-run Medicare counseling program. During Medicare’s open enrollment period, you can make a free, unbiased, confidential appointment with a certified His PA-MEDI counselor. Individual reservations are available on Wednesdays listed above at 10:30am, 12:15pm, or 1:30pm. This service is free and open to the public. The 4th annual Wednesday Readers, Phoenixville Public Library’s in-person book discussion group for adults of all ages, will next meet at the library on Wednesday, October 25th at 1:00 p.m. The group will discuss the award-winning best-selling novel “Horse” by Geraldine Brooks. 1850, Kentucky: Enslaved groom Jarrett and his bay colt form a bond that leads the horse to record victories across the South. When the Civil War breaks out, an artist known for his horse paintings joins the Union Army. At a dangerous time, far from the racetrack, he is reunited with his stallion and stablekeeper. New York City, 1954: A gallery owner becomes obsessed with his 19th-century equestrian paintings of mysterious origin. Washington, DC, 2019: An Australian-born Smithsonian scientist and a Nigerian-American art historian are drawn together by a shared interest in horses. Based on the true story of Lexington, the record-breaking thoroughbred who became America’s greatest stallion, Brooks writes a multi-layered, fascinating examination of the legacies of slavery and racism. The Phoenixville Public Library will host an AARP Smart Driver Refresher Class on Thursday, October 26th from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. This course provides participants with the opportunity to learn how to drive more efficiently and safely and includes up-to-date information about changes to ourselves, our vehicles and our roads. To participate in this refresher class, participants must have previously taken his 8-hour Smart Driver class. The fee is $20.00 for AARP members and $25.00 for non-members and may be paid by check or money order. The event is open to the public.
