Three people were killed in shootings at two Walmart stores in the U.S. within 24 hours, according to reports.
A gunman opened fire at an Ohio Walmart on Monday, injuring four shoppers before turning the gun on himself.
The day before, a suspect shot and killed a man and a woman as they entered a Walmart store in Alaska.
One of the deadliest mass shootings in recent years occurred at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, in August 2019, when gunman Patrick Crusius killed 23 people in a racist attack.
Gunshots rang out again at the discount retailer Sunday night in Alaska, leaving a man and a woman dead after a suspect opened fire at a Walmart in South Anchorage.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, but as of Monday the gunman was still at large, Anchorage police said in an update posted on Facebook.
When police arrived on scene, they found the victim’s body with gunshot wounds in the parking lot near the store’s entrance.
“It happened right outside the front door. It’s just insane,” APD Police Officer and Crime Scene Team Leader Sean Keating told Alaska Public Media.
The Walmart store, less than half a mile from Dimond Center, Alaska’s largest shopping mall, was closed following the incident, and officers helped shoppers and employees from the parking lot to their cars.
Police have released few other details about the deadly shooting. The newspaper has reached out to Anchorage police for comment.
Just 24 hours later, a gunman walked into an Ohio Walmart and opened fire on shoppers, injuring four people before turning the gun on himself.
Police said in a Facebook update Monday night that the victims were taken to a local hospital, but their conditions “are unknown at this time.”
The gunman, who has not yet been identified, was in possession of an assault rifle, witnesses told 5 News Online.
Walmart told the outlet it was “saddened by what happened at our store in the Dayton suburb of Beavercreek, Ohio.”
“The situation remains evolving and we are working closely with investigators on the scene,” the Arkansas-based retailer added.
Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the shooting.
The newspaper has reached out to the Beavercreek Police Department and the discount chain, which has more than 4,600 stores in the United States and more than 5,200 worldwide, for comment.
