GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Thousands of graduates will return to North Carolina A&T State University for an event-packed weekend. The GHOE festivities continue all week.
Several alumni said what kept them coming back was the chance to connect with fellow Aggies.
“I think what keeps most people coming back is the sense of belonging that comes with being here on campus,” said North Carolina A&T State University graduate Justin Neal.
Many North Carolina A&T State University alumni traveled from near and far to participate in Homecoming.
One alumnus said he traveled from San Diego for GHOE, which has become a tradition for his family.
“We come back every year. My son is a senior here. He’s a biomedical engineer and my daughter graduated in 2021. She majored in art…we’re Aggies. It’s a family…I get to connect with all my friends, all my classmates every year…the whole experience itself is just amazing,” said Athanathon Monroe, a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University.
Many graduates say it feels like home, which is why they return to what they call “the greatest hometown on Earth.”
“It’s like a big family reunion…We really want to come back to the school that gave us everything and continue to give the love that we got while we were here,” North Carolina A&T said Shonda Luther, a State University graduate. .
“I think there are people who studied together, we failed together, we succeeded together…and we’re always here to encourage each other, and we want people to help us… I’m glad to be able to come back and pour as much for the next generation as you gave me,’” said Dara Kendall, a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University.
Several vendors attending Aggie Fan Fest said the large audience will be a boon for many small businesses.
“Not only do we have homecomings for A&T, but we do homecomings for other universities…compared to this…it’s not even just a few people. Actually, this is not just Greensboro, it’s this area. It’s very special,” said Andrew Crowley, owner of Slash Lush and a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University.
One vendor said this is their first year in business, their first year as a vendor during GHOE, and they are looking forward to the customers it will bring.
“I think it’s going to be very busy, but I’m up for the challenge,” said Valerie Ingram, owner of Heavenly Hive Kettle Corn.
Aggie Fan Fest is the largest special event operated by the city of Greensboro, with more than 65,000 people enjoying the event during North Carolina A&T State University’s homecoming weekend, according to the city.
