Cook safely this holiday
Area public safety officials are reminding residents that Thanksgiving is the most common time for home cooking fires, and unattended cooking is by far the leading cause. The New Canaan Fire Marshal’s Office and the New Canaan Fire Department offer the following tips:
- stand in the kitchen while cooking
- Keep children away from stoves, hot foods, liquids, and electric knives.
- Make sure electrical cords are not hanging off counters or within reach of children.
- Make sure smoke alarms are working
- If you’re frying a turkey, don’t overfill the fryer with water. Always use the turkey fryer outdoors on a level surface away from buildings and flammable materials. Be sure to have a tight-fitting lid in case the oil ignites. Keep your eyes peeled. The oil can be hot for hours, so wear long sleeves and safety glasses to protect from splashes and keep children and pets away. The turkey must be completely thawed before being placed in the fryer.
