SPOKANE, Wash. — One man is dead and two Spokane Police Department (SPD) officers are injured after a shoplifting incident that resulted in a fatal shooting.
According to SPD, officers spotted a shoplifting suspect near the entrance to a Walmart in North Colton and called for backup. SPD said both officers attempted to talk to the man, but the situation escalated into a scuffle, which then moved into the store and led to an exchange of gunfire.
The shooting was reported just before 10:30 a.m., and SPD said at least one officer fired shots. SPD said the victim’s identity will be released by the Spokane County Coroner’s Office at a later date.
SPD said both officers were injured during the fight, but the injuries were not caused by gunfire. One police officer was hospitalized with injuries. The police officer’s condition is currently unknown.
No one else in the store was injured.
SPD said a gun and ammunition were found on the man who was shot. A discharged Taser was also found in the area.
Police said the store was evacuated due to the incident. Police said it will remain closed while authorities investigate the incident.
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation, SPD said.
