Shoppers are threatening to boycott Walmart over inconvenient payment options at self-checkout.
The supermarket chain is asking customers to download the Walmart app if they want to use Tap to Pay.
Walmart doesn’t accept Apple Pay or Google Pay, despite their popularity among shoppers
Instead, consumers must download the big box retailer’s app and enter their payment information into Walmart Pay.
The service works similarly to the more popular options, and those with a Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard can also use it to earn points.
But these perks aren’t enough to stop controversy brewing among frustrated shoppers who want to avoid the extra step.
One user was so fed up with the lack of Apple Pay that he called for an all-out boycott on X (formerly known as Twitter).
One shopper said, “Why on earth hasn’t TapPay been introduced yet?” and tagged the store critical.
“I have not downloaded the app.”
Another social media user said Walmart is “too old” to not be able to implement Apple Pay, and another user asked why it’s easier to pay at gas stations.
“This is why Target always wins my heart,” wrote another user in response to criticism of Walmart Pay.
Walmart accepts Visa and Mastercard, most major debit and credit cards, American Express, Discover/Novus, store gift cards, EBT cards, and cash at all self-checkout kiosks .
Shoppers who have struggled to pay at self-checkouts have criticized a lack of staff to help them, but that could change in the near future.
Joe Pennington, director of communications for Walmart, acknowledged that self-checkout is here to stay, but noted that the system is constantly being tweaked.
“We are continually evaluating ways to provide the best shopping experience for our customers, including making adjustments to our store checkout areas,” he said in a previous statement to the US Sun. Stated.
“At this time, there are no plans to remove self-checkouts nationwide.”
Walmart has taken different approaches to the controversial payment method across the county.
The US Sun previously reported that three stores in Albuquerque, New Mexico, eliminated self-checkout in September.
Walmart has not confirmed the reason for the removal of these stores and the return to in-person checkout.
Some customers complained about this change, while others welcomed it as a way to increase interaction between customers and staff.
