Saratoga High School seniors Grant Huff and Yannis Hern won the 2023 Congressional App Challenge for the 18th Congressional District with their entry Aletheia. Mr. Grant and Mr. Yannis, who were honored earlier this month by the contest’s founding co-chair, Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo, competed against entries from middle school and high school students from throughout Eshoo’s 18th Congressional District.
Their app Aletheia is a real-time fact checker integrated into the browser that allows users to verify news statements. While reading an article, users can highlight a passage and right-click to have Aletheia fact-check it. Aleseia’s research emulates the many steps journalists go through to fact-check a statement.
This is Grant Hough’s second Congressional App Challenge honor after finishing second in last year’s SpeakEasy app. It is a personal digital writing assistant that detects potentially offensive content in real time and suggests alternative wording that can be easily and instantly adapted to the user’s opinion. Established by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, the Congressional App Challenge aims to foster innovation and engagement in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education field. Apps will be judged on the quality of their ideas, including creativity and originality. Implementation of ideas including user experience and design. and demonstrated excellence in coding and programming skills.
Each winner of the Congressional App Challenge will be invited to the #HouseofCode Capitol Hill reception and their app will be displayed on Capitol Hill and on House.gov for one year. For more information, visit CongressionalAppChallenge.us.
