International Dark Sky Week | April 8th-15th
This week begins with the Shadow of the Sun Festival, a celebration of the solar eclipse. RLHT has activities planned every day through Saturday. We would like to introduce some of the contents of the project!
Join us for our annual Rangeley Lights Out event. The event encourages everyone to turn off unnecessary lights for one hour from 8 to 9 p.m.
Learn how to take an inventory of your home or camp lighting to ensure your lighting equipment is dark sky friendly.
Watch “Losing the Dark” and “Defending the Dark,” documentaries about light pollution issues around the world and right here in Maine.
Join the Globe at Night movement and become a citizen scientist! Measure the brightness of specific stars from your backyard to see how light pollution is affecting us over time please.
Take a virtual tour of Rangeley’s night sky in the Stellarium at Northern Stars Planetarium.
And, of course, stargaze on RLHT’s Dark Sky Trail.
This winter, Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust will maintain the following trailheads:
Hatchery Brook Reserve
Bonnie Point Reserve
Hunter Cove Wildlife Sanctuary
Hunter Cove Upland Preserve
South Bog Reserve
eco venture campus
These reserves are free to the public and open from dawn to dusk.
