ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Phoebe has teamed up with Albany Tech to create a facility where students can become an RN, LPN, CNA or phlebotomy technician while living in new apartments on Phoebe's campus.
Albany Tech nursing students spend their first semester at the community college and then, after completing prerequisite courses, spend their final four semesters at Phoebe.
“At first, you spend most of your time in the classroom. Then you have skills labs where you learn specific skills and you practice what you've learned in books. Then in your second year of nursing, you start your clinical placement in a hospital. You get to experience working in a hospital and interacting with real people. It's a little different every day, and every day is a little different,” said Scott Steiner, president and CEO of Phoebe Putney.
The main floor within the Living & Learning Community building will house classrooms, labs and simulations for students to practice on before moving on to real patients.
“This is a very multi-functional space that the technical college system designed to be as flexible as possible for the foreseeable future. There's lots of student space, study spaces, quiet areas and social areas. We really wanted this to be modern and cutting edge and I think we've achieved that,” Steiner said.
The second floor of the community center will be home to a total of 80 apartments, including studios, one-bedroom and even two-bedroom apartments.
Students do not have to live on Phoebe's campus to participate in the program, but Phoebe will cover their living expenses if they commit to employment after graduation.
There is a shortage of healthcare workers in Georgia, and both Phoebe and Albany Technical hope this partnership will add more nurses to the region and to Phoebe Putney's health system.
