From Monday, October 9, 2023 to Friday, October 13, 2023, Pepperdine’s Caruso School of Law invites students to participate in Mental Health Awareness Week. The week is an annual event featuring daily activities aimed at raising awareness of the national mental health crisis, specifically the national mental health crisis. “Today’s law students are dealing with disproportionate rates of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, and many are not on campus,” said Hannah Nabors, Caruso School of Law’s Student Life and Advocacy Coordinator. They are not aware of the resources available to them.” She added: “One of the opportunities we offer during Mental Health Awareness Week is the Wellness Table Creation, where we will be working with Pepperdine Resilience-Based Skills Education Program (RISE), Student Health Centers, Student Care Teams, the University and others. We invite campus organizations from the Counseling Center and Title IX Office to reach out to students regarding mental health resources available on campus.”
Wellness Tables will be held in the School of Law’s Ron V. Smith Atrium and will feature organizations such as the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health and Pepperdine’s on-campus wellness resources, which will highlight mental health resources available at the university and around Los Angeles. Students will have the opportunity to attend presentations led by the RISE program that discuss topics such as resilience and how to learn the skills needed to overcome everyday challenges. Guest speaker Rita Abella, Senior Program Analyst in the Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP) Professional Competency Division, will discuss LAP’s mental health and substance abuse resources available to all law students and attorneys. Additionally, to help students relieve midterm stress, therapy dogs will be on the front lawn of the School of Law on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from noon to 2 p.m.
“Mental Health Awareness Week allows us to have great conversations with students about mental health, which likely affects more people than they realize, and helps them understand that they are not alone. “You can do that,” Neighbors said. “Learning how to speak and prioritizing your mental health is extremely important, especially if you choose a profession that requires you to advocate for others, such as the legal field.”
