The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is participating in a Canadian research study examining the nutrition, health and environment of Indigenous children and youth between the ages of three and 19.
A special opening event was held on October 18th at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Center with Research Coordinator Amy Ng and Nutrition Research Coordinator Arianna LaFortune. The event also included a dinner, which was an opportunity for coordinators to meet with local residents and distribute information on Food, Environment, Health and Nutrition for Indigenous Children and Youth (FEHNCY).
“This project is kind of an offshoot of another project that was done for over 10 years with adults. So the interest is in children and what’s happening to them. , the same researchers who were conducting research studies with adults are participating in this study, “children,” Ing said.
She explained that the project will collect information from participating households in collaboration with locally employed community researchers. Air quality monitors will be installed in each home, and participants will record health data such as weight, height, waist circumference, and blood pressure. Participants will also be asked to provide blood, urine and hair samples.
