OneDrive app for Teams is now available this month
The OneDrive app for Teams is now accessible in the “new Microsoft Teams,” according to Thursday’s announcement.
Currently, only new Microsoft Teams users can see the OneDrive for Teams app. If it’s deployed in a Microsoft 365 tenant, you’ll be able to access the OneDrive for Teams app from the left vertical navigation bar. In such a case,[ファイル]where the menu item was[OneDrive]Menu item icons are displayed. In the new Teams,[ファイル]The option will be replaced with the OneDrive option.
Microsoft said in October that it was working on a new “third-generation OneDrive” cloud storage with a greater emphasis on collaboration. Many of the new features were scheduled to be released this month, including the switch to the OneDrive App for Teams within Teams. OneDrive’s Copilot is also expected to arrive this month, but it doesn’t seem to have been announced yet.
The OneDrive app for Teams should look like the following screenshot.
The OneDrive app for Teams is famous for allowing users to search for shared files based on things like the sender’s name, or based on meeting files recorded in Teams. It’s probably most useful for people who tend to spend a lot of time in Teams.
Microsoft plans to bring the OneDrive App for Teams to “classic” Teams and Teams mobile apps as well, expected to be available in “early 2024,” but in those instances.[ファイル]Menu names will be retained, the announcement explains.
New improvements to the OneDrive experience in Teams will roll out to classic Teams in early 2024, with the Files app name unchanged. Additionally, there are no changes to the Files app in Teams mobile at this time.
Microsoft included a note for organizations that wish to use “third-party” (non-Microsoft) storage services with the new Teams. To use the OneDrive app for Teams, you need to install a third-party app. Here’s how that concept is expressed in the presentation:
We’ve introduced new features to the OneDrive app for Teams, so in order to access files in a third-party storage service in the new Teams, you’ll need a Teams app that supports that service. You can find and download these apps by tapping the app icon in the left rail of Teams. We work closely with third-party cloud and content management providers to expand the range of available apps built for Teams.
IT professionals are also gaining some new capabilities in this regard. Third-party content storage has Teams file policy controls. “If your organization chooses a third party for content storage, you must turn off the NativeFileEntryPoints parameter in the Teams file policy,” Microsoft explains in this document.
Another potential benefit for IT professionals is the ability to use the “autoinstall” feature for approved apps in Microsoft Teams. This complies with your organization’s app permissions policy for users. Enabling this feature allows single sign-on access to these apps even outside of Teams, such as in a web browser.
