Nutley Elementary School will have to switch to remote learning this week after Monday’s fire damaged the building, district officials announced Tuesday.
Superintendent Kent Vanier sent an email to the Lincoln School community announcing that after visiting the school and speaking with both improvement officers and Nutley staff, the decision has been made not to reside at the school this week.
“In collaboration with the New Jersey Department of Education, virtual instruction was approved for Lincoln School this week,” Vanier said in an email. He said schools will “focus on state-approved virtual learning plans” on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Vanier said officials were at the school to assess the damage, test the ambient air quality and begin repairs.
“The safety of our staff and students is our top priority and all groups are currently working toward reopening Lincoln to staff and students on Monday,” he said.
For anyone with questions, a meeting will be held at the high school Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
The school district announced Monday that schools would be closed Tuesday due to the fire. Bania said in a statement that there were no injuries and that the fire started on the roof and the auditorium was severely damaged. The school district was closed for Columbus Day.
Lincoln School on Harrison Street in Nutley has 440 students, according to the school district’s website.
