It’s no exaggeration to say that nearly 98% of smartphone users (255.8 million to be exact) are passionate about exploring new apps on a regular basis.
However, trends in the world of app evolution are continuing to change as we speak. And most of this change has to do with the fact that so many apps are emerging from all corners of the world.
Things are different this year, according to statistics obtained from a recently published Insider Intelligence outlet that published a report for mobile app users. You can see how interesting this change is because people are installing fewer apps than before. They would rather stick to the regular things they love, which come from a long list of categories.
Keeping in mind that most app users are not that expert when it comes to technology, the reason has to do with how most people try to figure out how to use their smartphones.
Every year, nearly 4 million new users enter the world of smartphone apps. But such newcomers are not the ones to avoid apps. They just happen to be part of the majority of smartphone users. And it has been seen here that many people prefer to go against the trend of finding new apps.
These people want to download fewer apps, and trends show that number is decreasing year over year. This year, the average individual has nearly 18.5 applications on their phone. And if you compare this number with 2020, it has decreased by about 2.5 times.
So why is this change happening in the first place? The answer is that this change is linked to users searching for their preferred apps to adhere strictly to the change.
Next, we will discuss the world and concept of super apps and how this trend is accelerating at a faster pace than before. This concept has become very popular thanks to industry giants like WeChat and Grab.
For those who are not yet familiar with this concept, we are seeing a long list of super apps emerge and serve people to simplify their lives.
And yes, Elon Musk is also leading the charge in turning his X platform into an Everything app. Moreover, experts have proven how this is an ideal choice in countries with limited infrastructure.
However, in regions like the Western world, the number of apps people have on their phones is decreasing due to the abundance of app choices.
Meanwhile, let’s look at another very interesting scenario. Of the 17 apps, nearly 15 are outpacing new user growth. And from 2023 to 2026, the number of overall smartphone app users will continue to grow by nearly 1.54 per year.
Most application categories are expected to grow by 1.54% annually. This shows that more people are interested in exploring a wide range of app areas.
So things are clearly changing a lot, and as it becomes clear, more and more people are moving towards their coveted apps and are reluctant to discover and use new apps.
Currently, super apps have great potential as they make the lives of users easier by offering a huge range of services from a single location. But at the same time, creators’ focus on super apps will create stiff competition for regular apps used for a single purpose.
So, if we were to summarize and conclude the findings of this report, we would say that super apps shine brighter than ever thanks to the fact that they simplify life. Second, this year the app adoption rate has dropped to just 18.5 apps per user. And finally, more categories of apps allow for more exploration even if users don’t want to install them.
