Native American Heritage Month is in full swing, and several events celebrating dozens of tribes, their customs, and personalities are open to the public in Southern California.
Since 1990, the United States has designated November as a time of cultural appreciation and remembrance of “the nation’s original inhabitants and their descendants.”
Approximately 110 tribes have been federally recognized, and 81 more are seeking recognition in the Golden State, according to California courts. California, which has the largest Native American population in the United States, has sought policies to strengthen broader cultural protections.
