The NASA International Space Apps Hackathon (Space Apps) is coming to Folsom again. The annual Space Apps Hackathon is a free global event held simultaneously in hundreds of cities around the world. Sacramento-area participants will host the event at the Granite City Coworking Events Center, 795 Gold Lake Drive, Suite 100, on October 5th and 6th, from 9am to 5pm. Because space is limited and information will be provided to participants in advance, participants must pre-register through a local page hosted on the NASA website.
Space Apps is an experience that brings together a community of scientists, programmers, engineers, designers, students, artists, storytellers, and innovators to solve some of the most pressing problems on Earth and in space. Anyone who registers will join or create a team. 20 “challenges” have been created by NASA experts. Teams will work on one of them over the weekend. Please note that working on a project before the weekend begins will disqualify you. Teams can also create their own projects, but they will not be subject to review by NASA.

Teams can form from now until Saturday morning, October 5th. Then everyone will immediately get to work creating their solutions. The hackathon will culminate on Sunday with team presentations (or “pitches”) judged by local business leaders, aerospace experts, educators, and investors. Challenges will be categorized into three difficulty levels: beginner/youth, intermediate, and advanced. Project focuses will range from climate to medicine, engineering, gaming, and art. Results and testimonials from past years have demonstrated that the most innovative collaborations happen when people of all ages and backgrounds are involved. This year's theme is “The Sun Touches All.”
The annual NASA International Space Apps Challenge began in 2012. Since then, over 2,400 local events have been held in over 185 countries. : Originally, “Space Apps” was only for space science. It now includes Earth sciences, arts and humanities, and is open to anyone, regardless of skill or passion.
“What's great about this hackathon is that it brings together a community of all ages to solve real-world and space problems,” said Ingrid Rosten, regional lead for the Folsom Regional event. “We need this event now more than ever. It's fun, and together we can create big change locally and globally.”
The program is sponsored by Granite City Coworking, CalNY Technologies, the Sacramento Chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Aero Maestro Book Publishing, Technovate Investments LLC and the California Air and Space Museum.
