Aug. 25 (UPI) — The Food and Drug Administration announced that Refresco Beverages US Inc. is recalling 9,535 8-ounce cases of Great Value apple juice sold at Walmart. The agency said the apple juice “contains inorganic arsenic in excess of limits established by industry guidelines” and upgraded the recall to a Class II recall, defined as “the violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible health injury or the likelihood of serious health injury is low.”
According to the FDA, inorganic arsenic is more dangerous than organic arsenic, and long-term exposure has been linked to skin problems and an increased risk of skin, bladder and lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
According to the FDA, short-term exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, bruising and numbness or burning in the hands and feet.
The recalled apple juice has the UPC code 0-78742-29655-5, is sold in six-packs, and has a listed best-by date of December 2024.
The FDA released an interactive online map showing the states where the juice was sold. All of the affected stores were east of the Mississippi River. Stores west of the river did not sell the recalled juice, according to the FDA.
