HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) — Police are investigating after a shooting victim showed up at a Hesperia Walmart early Monday morning asking for help.
The shooting apparently occurred around 4:30 a.m. at a nearby apartment building, and the injured victim drove himself to Walmart.
There was a blood trail outside the store, which appeared to track a man as he staggered from the parking lot to the front door before collapsing outside.
Authorities were alerted and the man was taken to a nearby hospital. He survived the shooting, but an update on his condition was not immediately available.
Investigators say they were called to an apartment in the area a short time earlier on a report of a shooting. They determined the man at Walmart had been shot inside his apartment. Witnesses said they heard an argument between two men before the shooting. One witness said he heard at least four gunshots.
The events leading up to the shooting remain under investigation. Investigators are still searching for the shooter.
Shoppers who arrived at Walmart as employees were cleaning up were shocked to hear of the violence.
“I thought it was another stolen car,” said Heather Yates of Hesperia. “I didn’t expect to hear about a shooting. I’m really sorry to hear that in my city. Things are definitely getting worse.”
