Malcolm Alonzo, who is accused of filming people inside the restroom of a local Walmart, has been released from prison ahead of his trial.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Malcolm Alonzo, the man accused of filming people inside the restroom of a local Walmart, has been released from prison ahead of his trial.
A 17-year-old Walmart employee said he witnessed Alonzo filming others inside the men’s room at the Walmart off Coors near Interstate 40.
“What’s very concerning is that if he’s going into a public restroom and doing this, he’s working for the city,” said Emily Edmonds, assistant district attorney for the 2nd Judicial District. ” he said. “He has access to public restrooms and he has access to the public to perform the acts he did in this incident.”
Alonzo works as a library services supervisor at the Westgate Public Library.
Alonzo’s appointed attorney, Rosa Osborne, argued that Alonzo has no recent criminal history and is not a flight risk.
“But, of course, for the time being, Mr. Alonzo is presumed innocent of these allegations and, as I said, he has no intention of harming children or any sexual nature of any kind.” He has no history of making any allegations,” Osborne said.
Alonzo has previously been charged with driving under the influence. His last offense was in 2014.
Judge Courtney Weeks ultimately decided to deny the state’s request for preventive detention. She said Alonzo would be released because no matter how serious the charges are, the charges themselves are not enough to keep him in prison. However, Alonzo is not completely free. He needs to follow some rules when going out.
Alonzo will not be allowed to leave his home between 7pm and 6am and will be monitored by GPS at all times.
Judge Weeks also stated that Alonzo cannot consume alcohol or drugs, including marijuana.
The city’s Department of Arts and Culture released a statement acknowledging the allegations against Alonzo and saying they were deeply concerned.
“The Department of Arts and Culture and Public Libraries have acknowledged the allegations against Malcolm Alonzo, the City of Albuquerque’s Library Services Supervisor.
This charge and recent arrest are deeply concerning as we have the utmost respect for the privacy and safety of individuals and communities. We take these allegations seriously and will address this matter in accordance with the City’s established human resources procedures and procedures.
In accordance with public library protocols, each branch will have at least two staff members on-site at all times to support the safety of staff and library patrons.
We have not received any complaints about the Westgate Library or about Mr. Alonzo’s conduct at the library. ”
