Authorities in Maine said multiple people were shot to death and dozens more were injured in multiple shootings Wednesday night.
Law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that at least 16 people were killed and dozens injured, and noted that the death toll was expected to rise.
In a Facebook post, Maine State Police (MSP) said there was an active shooting in Lewiston and advised residents to evacuate, stay inside and lock their doors.
“Law enforcement is currently conducting investigations in two locations. Again, please do not go on the streets and allow law enforcement to diffuse the situation. If you see any suspicious activity or person If so, please call 911,” MSP said in the post.
In a separate Facebook post, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) said it was investigating two shootings in the area, and included a photo of the shooting suspect in the post. Published.
“We are encouraging all businesses to lock down or close their doors during the investigation,” ACSO said in a post. “The suspect is still at large.”
Officials also told the newswire that multiple people were injured in the incident and said investigators were working to collect evidence at multiple crime scenes.
