LEWISTON — A long line of trucks was parked outside the Walmart distribution center in Lewiston on Friday morning, waiting to enter the large grocery distribution facility to unload packages.
Photojournalist Darrin Slover, who visited the facility midday Friday, said there were an estimated 65 or more tractor-trailers parked near the entrance to the facility at 31 Alfred A. Prude Parkway. . One truck driver said he arrived at the distribution center at 9pm on Wednesday and has been waiting ever since to arrive and unload his cargo.
“There must have been 100 police officers here,” Chicago driver Wesley Holman said Wednesday night.
“We’re off to Maine. What a great ride,” he said, adding that a truck was already in front of him when he pulled up.
“It’s like COVID-19, it’s like a snowstorm in Buffalo, you can’t go anywhere,” said George Castle, a truck driver from Buffalo, New York, who was waiting for a large shipment of onions to be delivered on Friday. Ta.
Despite the chaotic situation, Slover said the atmosphere was friendly, with people handing out snacks provided by Walmart. However, some trucks had to leave to refuel, as refrigerated trucks and refrigerated trucks must continually travel to keep their perishable cargo safe.
Most employees have not been on site since Wednesday night’s shootings at Just In Time Recreation and Skimenzie’s Bar & Grill put the establishments on lockdown. There were multiple reports of a third shooting that night at a Walmart distribution center less than three miles from Ski Menzies. Walmart later issued a statement saying no shootings occurred on company property.
Some employees were called in to begin unloading trucks on Friday, and the gates were unlocked just after noon, allowing trucks to enter the distribution center. Some were told to report to work on Friday afternoon or evening, while others were told to arrive by 3 a.m. on Saturday.
Walmart spokesman Joe Pennington said employee safety remains the top priority and the facility is in the process of reopening. “We are coordinating with local officials to reopen our Walmart distribution center in Lewiston. We also continue to work with nearby distribution centers to minimize disruption,” he said at 2 p.m. Most of the trucks were off the road near the distribution center shortly after that time.
