JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Several events are planned in Johnson City this month to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The City of Johnson City is holding a variety of public events leading up to, during and after his January 15th holiday.
Below is a list of events in Johnson City honoring and remembering Martin Luther King Jr.
worship
What: Interdenominational worship hosted by the Johnson City Pastors Alliance.
Location: St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, 201 Welbourne St.
When: Wednesday, January 10th, 7:00 p.m.

prayer breakfast
What: An annual interfaith event that tells the story of Dr. King and his legacy.Guest speaker is Dr. Harold Middlebrook
Location: Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 225 Princeton Road
When: Saturday, January 13th, starting at 8:30 a.m.
Cost: Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased on the day of the event. Proceeds support Carver Recreation Center’s annual youth trips to civil rights historic sites.

What: Countywide food drive supporting Good Samaritan Ministries, Jonesboro Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry

Reading event
What: An annual event that educates youth (ages 6-12) about Dr. King and the civil rights movement through storytelling and music.

Unity programs and walks
What: A short ceremony culminates in a unity walk (less than 2 miles).

What it is: We give our blood to help others and honor those who shed their blood for others.

What: An annual event that celebrates Dr. King’s legacy and celebrates the individuals who make our community special.

Vincent Dial Student Art Exhibition
What: The art on display will feature students from Washington County Schools and Johnson City Schools. The artwork will be inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement.

2024 Event: The Importance of MLK in the Latinx Community
What: Dr. Paul Ortiz teaches at the University of Florida. His research interests include African American and Latino history in the United States. He describes the multicultural elements of the modern civil rights movement.
