Located in the heart of Aldine ISD, Mead Middle School is a place of learning, growth, and inspiration thanks to its dedicated leader, Principal Jose Lara Collazo. Lara Collazo was born into a Mexican family and immigrated to the United States at the age of 15. He is the eldest of four siblings.
He learned early on the value of hard work and the importance of education. His family’s move to the United States marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
“My Hispanic heritage makes me who I am,” Lara Collazo said. “The fact that 90% of her students are Hispanic also gives her a sense of connection.”
Not only is he a leader within Aldine, he is also a product of the district having graduated from Nimitz High School. Much of his success is due to his ESL teachers who challenged him to become better throughout his education.
Principal Lara-Collazo joined Aldine ISD in 2020 as assistant principal at Meade Middle School and was appointed assistant principal for curriculum in 2022. This is his first year as principal and principal of Meade Middle School.
Lara-Collazo’s background serves as a foundation for understanding the community, giving both bilingual emerging students and newcomers a sense of identity and belonging within the school.
During this Hispanic Heritage Month, he will be working at Meade Middle School by promoting cultural celebrations within the school, including Loteria Day and the upcoming Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. We have fostered an inclusive environment.
Lotería Day, a traditional Mexican game of chance, brings students together to celebrate their cultural roots while enjoying a fun-filled day of friendship. Additionally, the upcoming Day of the Dead celebration will provide students and the community with a meaningful opportunity to connect with their heritage and honor their ancestors.
Principal Lara Collazo’s dedication to education and commitment to cultural heritage has earned her recognition during both Hispanic Heritage Month and National Principals Month. His story is a testament to the power of his education and continuing to pursue his dreams no matter the obstacles.
“My advice to students is to not give up,” Lara Collazo said. “No matter where you come from, we have so much to offer as a community.”
