The way most players improve year over year is usually due to physical changes, and Thomas worked closely with therapists and sports psychologists during the 2023 offseason.
“Through the fears, doubts and worries, I've learned to love myself,” Thomas said. “I've also done a lot of unapologetically personal work. I've learned to live in the moment and not obsess about making this game. It's taken a lot of hard work. I'm not perfect and I still fall back into old habits, but I'm surrounded by people who remind me to live in a new way.”
Thomas' progress has continued this summer. The former Stanford defensive lineman performed well in training camp. On Wednesday, during a joint practice with the Giants, Thomas won two one-on-one matches against running back Greg Van Roten.
The Jets will travel to California to face Thomas' former team on Monday night, Sept. 9, to open the 2024 regular season. The 49ers drafted Thomas third overall in 2017 and he played four seasons with the team before signing with the Raiders and then the Jets.
Thomas is eager to return to the West Coast not only to see friends and family, but also to showcase his new and improved playing style as he enters his eighth professional season.
“San Francisco is a second home to me,” Thomas said. “I went to school in the city so it's great to be back. I'll be playing where I started my career, against one of my best friends, Christian McCaffrey, and I'll be playing my 100th NFL game there. Like every game, I'm very excited for this one.”
