Latest development status
- Tuesday marks one month since Israel began shelling Gaza. The death toll in the Gaza Strip has exceeded 10,000, and calls for a ceasefire are growing. The Gaza Ministry of Health said at least 2,660 people were missing. Israel’s military action comes after a deadly attack by the Hamas militant group in Israel on October 7 left more than 1,400 people dead.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday rejected calls for a ceasefire until more than 200 Israelis held by Hamas are released. In an interview with ABC News, he suggested that Israel would continue to control security in Gaza even after the war with Hamas ends.
- On Monday, hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered at the Port of Tacoma in Washington state to intercept a military ship believed to be carrying weapons to Israel.
Human influence and combat
- About 70 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been forced to flee due to constant bombing and shelling, according to the Gaza Press Agency. On Monday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that 5,000 people moved from northern Gaza to southern Gaza that day alone, after Israel split the enclave into two.
- According to the International Labor Organization, job losses in Gaza and the occupied West Bank cost Palestinians $16 million a day.
- Israeli bombings the previous day hit areas around hospitals in Rafah and Gaza City in the south, killing dozens of people.
- The submarine the United States deployed to the Middle East on Sunday is a variant of a guided missile submarine and is not capable of launching nuclear weapons, a U.S. defense official told The Associated Press.
- The Hamas militant group announced that it fired 16 rockets at Israel from southern Lebanon in response to Israel’s attack on Gaza.

- South Africa and Chad have become the two latest countries to recall their ambassadors to Israel, a minister in the South African Presidency and Chad’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday.
- European Union President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Monday that the EU would increase aid to Gaza by $27 million (25 million euros).
- Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he does not approve of unilateral sanctions against supporters of Hamas and other Palestinian groups. He said such sanctions by the US could also affect Malaysia’s reputation for the US government, companies and investments.
- The United Nations Security Council held a closed session on Monday regarding the Israel-Gaza war. After the meeting, representatives from the United Arab Emirates and China issued a joint statement calling for an “urgent humanitarian ceasefire” called for by both member states.
Arrests and attacks in the occupied West Bank
- In a raid on Monday, Israeli forces arrested Ahed Tamimi, a 22-year-old prominent Palestinian activist, on charges of “incitement to terrorism.” She was taken from the village of Nabi Saleh near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.
- Nine Palestinians have been killed in the occupied West Bank in the past 24 hours, two of whom died in Israeli custody, according to Al Jazeera correspondent Zein Basrabi. The circumstances of the deaths of the two detainees have not been disclosed.
- According to Al Jazeera Arabic, clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians were reported in Turkalum in the West Bank from Monday to Tuesday morning. At least five Palestinians were injured in the attack, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
