Today, iOS 18.1 beta 3 was released to developers, and Apple Intelligence added a new cleanup feature to Photos. Announced at WWDC, this feature can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of your photos.
iOS 18.1 adds new Apple Intelligence features
The new cleanup feature is available in the Photos app when editing photos. You'll notice a new eraser-style icon on the bottom toolbar. The feature has smart detection capabilities and uses multiple machine learning models to detect junk, find the edges of unwanted objects, and replace them. The feature can also identify and remove shadows and reflections from unwanted objects.
The cleanup feature also knows the location of people in your photo, helping you avoid accidentally deleting or replacing parts of people.
Clean Up intelligently identifies distracting elements in the background of your photo and allows you to remove them in a single tab, or you can manually zoom in and use your finger as a retouching brush to remove distracting elements.
Finally, this feature applies to all images in your photo library, not just images taken with your iPhone.
The cleanup feature is available in iOS 18.1 beta 3, which is currently available to developers. When you use the feature for the first time, iOS 18.1 will “download” and “prepare” the required models. It is also available in the latest iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1 betas.
In addition to the cleanup, iOS 18.1 beta 3 expands notification summaries powered by Apple Intelligence beyond Messages and Mail. Check out our full article for more details on this change.
