Halide co-founder Ben Sandofsky has a message for everyone who asks if video capture will be added to the popular iPhone photo app: “Never.” Halide’s development team, Lux, is working on Kino instead. This is a new dedicated video capture app for iPhone that aims to provide professional recording capabilities as Apple supports log video encoding. Release is scheduled for February…if all goes to plan.
Just as the Halide photo app was released in 2017 at the same time that Apple added RAW support to the iPhone, Kino’s development comes at a time when Apple announced support for log video encoding in September. It was facilitated by what I did. Log video encoding is a format that can preserve more detail for post-production color grading. . In Sandovsky’s own words, “A log video is to a filmmaker what his RAW is to a photographer.” It’s a powerful file format that allows for even more enhanced editing capabilities. Currently, Apple Log (the company’s proprietary version of the Log video encoding format) is only supported on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
There is little information about Kino’s features and pricing has not yet been revealed. Sandovski said he used a “light version” of the Kino app to record the video presentation, but did not review any details. Kino’s development team has set a deadline to start releasing the app by his February 2024 deadline to avoid delays due to the birth of Sandovsky’s first child (congratulations!). We plan to openly share development updates along the way. “We have an idea of what the app should be, but we don’t know how to get there,” Sandovsky said.
