Ridgefield, New Jersey – The UConn women’s rowing team concluded its fall racing season at the NYRA Fall Invitational, racing at Villanova, Holy Cross, Fairfield and Marist. UConn competed her five boats, with her best performances coming in the 2nd Varsity 8 and 3rd Varsity 8 events. The second varsity eight team defeated the Heat in the morning and defeated Villanova and Fairfield to advance to the A final. UConn (7:27.6) won that race over Holy Cross (7:28.6) and Villanova (7:44.6). In the third Varsity 8, UW easily won in the morning heat, beating Fairfield by almost a minute. In the afternoon finals, UConn won by his 19 seconds over Holy Cross and by his 24 seconds over UConn’s third varsity 8 B crew. In the college four meet, UConn hit debris during the morning race, dislodged its fin, lost steering and had to stop rowing. They raced in the B final of the afternoon and placed third behind Holy Cross A and B. Varsity 8 had a very competitive race in the morning with only 4 seconds separating the 5 boats between the two races. In the afternoon, five teams played the finals together, with UConn finishing in his fourth place.th (7:27.5) behind Holy Cross (7:19.0), Marist (7:23.4), Villanova (7:24.7) and in front of Fairfield (7:31.0).
Coach Sanford said, “Overall I was pretty encouraged with today’s race. UW showed some good fight and composure in some pretty close races. Shifting gears from a head race to a 2K at the end of the fall season. I’m very happy to have the opportunity to do this. It’s a reminder that we have to look forward to this spring.”
