WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — Large crowds are expected to be in Winston-Salem this weekend as Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University hold homecoming weekend celebrations.
Additional traffic is expected within the city and on both campuses. Local law enforcement said authorities were prepared to ensure the safety of the event.
WSSU Campus Police said there will be an increased presence of officers on campus as the university expects approximately 10,000 people to attend events over the next few days.
WSSU Police Chief Amir Henry said, “To ensure the safety of our campus community, we will have an increased number of security guards and police officers, including foot patrols and dorm checks.”
Due to the pandemic and weather concerns, several of WSSU’s homecoming events have sold out, making this the first homecoming packed with events in four years.
Henry said the officers completed some safety training in preparation for their return.
“We tell our students to make sure their phones have a star in case they need to call for help. If you come and cross MLK, be sure to use crosswalks and obey traffic signs,” Henry said.
He said he is in contact with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and the Winston-Salem Police Department in preparation for this weekend.
WSPD said it is working with surrounding agencies to make appropriate preparations for upcoming homecoming events at WFU and WSSU.
They are encouraging motorists to find alternative routes this weekend and advising them to be patient if they have to travel in areas near either university as heavy traffic is expected. .
In a statement provided to FOX8, WSPD said, “We always work hard to prepare for large events like this, so our residents can feel safe during the celebration.”
“This is the biggest week of the year for you…It’s an exciting time,” Henry said. “We look forward to seeing all of our alumni, faculty, staff, and visitors, so we just want to see them enjoying all the festivities that Winston-Salem State has to offer.”
WFU did not have anyone available to talk to me today about campus law enforcement regarding Homecoming.
Other area universities are also expected to draw spectators to the Triad, including the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, which will hold its homecoming in Greensboro this weekend.
