Salt Lake City (ABC4) – Although there was no official lighting ceremony due to construction, there is still plenty to see and do in Temple Square this year.
The illumination of Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City, an annual tradition for many Utahns, turned on Friday, Nov. 24, without the fuss that has gone on for years. The lights will be on every night from 3:30pm to 10pm and every morning from 6am to 8am until January 1, 2024.
Christmas concerts are held daily to coincide with the square’s illuminations, as well as the traditional midday organ recital. Concerts are presented by local groups such as high schools, colleges, and area choirs. There are more than 280 free, ticket-free performances, which will be held at various times from November 25th to December 23rd, Monday through Sunday, from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Concert venues include City Creek Center (near the Giving Machine); , in the Conference Center lobby, Church History Museum auditorium, and in the Tabernacle. New this year, live streaming concerts will be held daily from the Tabernacle from 12:45pm to 1:30pm. At the beginning of each concert, a Christmas message will be shared by representatives from various departments of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. .
In addition to musical events, visitors to the Temple Square area can enjoy a collection of nativity scenes from around the world in the plaza outside the church office building from November 26th to December 31st. Family Search Library hosts Christmas around Christmas. A global exhibition about the food and traditions of different countries. Also includes activities for children.
For those looking to donate to humanitarian efforts this holiday season, the “Light the World” donation machine is back again this year. There are several donation machines located at the City Creek Center.
