- Google is rolling out several updates today (August 28) to its Gemini app, starting with Imagen 3.
- It allows users to create “photorealistic,” high-quality images of animals, objects, plants and more, but Google says that generation of people will come along later.
- Gemini also employs Custom Gems, allowing users to create custom versions of the AI to suit their specific needs.
Google today (August 28) released an update to Gemini, its AI model for image generation and custom Gems.
Users who request assistance through the Gemini app will be offered the Imagen 3 upgrade, which Google reiterates is the new “standard” for “generating images with just a few words.” The company says users will be able to create photorealistic landscapes and images that mimic oil paintings.
Additionally, Google boasts about Imagen 3's ability to understand a user's natural speech and understand the intent behind their descriptions.
The rollout of Imagen 3 in the Gemini app will initially be limited to animals, plants, and other objects. Google says it will work on introducing people descriptions and Gemini-generated people images “in the coming days,” which will be available as early access for Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users in English.
Imagen 3 gives users full control over the text-to-image generation process, but Google places limitations on photos of people — for example, the software doesn't support photorealistic or “personally identifiable” artwork.
The final update, aimed at Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users, introduces “Custom Gems” for AI models. The press release states that these users can immediately start “creating and chatting” with their custom-made Gemini variants, a feature Google teased at I/O 2024, allowing users to tweak Gemini to fit their specific needs.
Google says that in Gemini, which will be rolling out over the next few days, users will find several pre-made and custom Gem options. The “Learning Coach” is said to help break down information for users learning a new or difficult topic for the first time. The “Brainstormer” option aims to provide inspiration for a variety of topics.
The remaining pre-made options are:
- Career Guide: Expand your career possibilities with a detailed plan to develop your skills and reach your career goals.
- Writing Editor: Help improve the quality of your writing by providing clear, constructive feedback on everything from grammar to structure.
- Coding Partner: Level up your coding skills and help you build projects and learn.
More importantly, anyone creating a custom Gemini should be as detailed as possible, with Google explaining that users can tell their custom Gemini variant its purpose and “how it should respond.”
Users can access the Gemini app on desktop or mobile to search for Gems or create their own. As Google has started to expand globally, most languages are supported.
If you want to be the first to try out Gemini's new features, you can sign up for Gemini Advanced or Gemini for Workspace.
