PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins could be traded to another National League team.
The Chicago Cubs and Hoskins’ agent have “been in contact regarding a potential free agent contract,” MLB Network’s John Morosi reported Tuesday.
Hoskins, who spent the past seven seasons with the Phillies, was expected to head elsewhere this offseason after becoming president of baseball operations. Manager Dave Dombrowski announced that Bryce Harper will play first base in the 2024 season.
Hoskins will miss the entire 2023 season with the Phillies due to a torn ACL. During spring training. He had a small chance to return to the Phillies if they advanced to the World Series, but he was eliminated in the playoffs by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series.
Hoskins was beloved during his time in Philadelphia and was considered a fan favorite. He was drafted by the Phillies in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB Draft and witnessed Philadelphia’s rebuild. Hoskins made his MLB debut late in the 2017 season and immediately made an impact as a rookie.
Hoskins played in 667 regular season games in a Phillies uniform and hit 148 home runs. His career batting averages were .242/.353/.492/.846.
Hoskins will share memories as the team advances toward the 2022 National League pennant and the World Series, including his bat spike after hitting a home run off Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider in Game 3 of the National League Division Series.
