A heat wave warning has been issued from noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. All middle and high school athletic events will be canceled due to the expected high temperatures.
District officials said outdoor athletic practices will be optional and will only be conducted early in the morning when temperatures are cooler, concluding by 6:45 a.m. Any changes to the after-school indoor activity schedule will be announced at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Only middle and high school students, as designated by the special education team, will attend school in person. Students are encouraged to attend school in person on their regular bell schedule and transportation will be provided.
Cross Cat, ISP, LSP, SKILLS and STARS special education programs will be held in-person on Tuesdays. Students may participate remotely.
Students enrolled in early childhood education programs and alternative learning opportunity programs will also not attend school in person on Tuesday.
Primary school buses will continue to operate as normal but delays are expected. As it is expected to be hot on the buses, parents are asked to make alternative arrangements for travel to and from school.
East View/Pathways students will also attend school in person on their regular schedule and transportation will be provided.
District officials said they took several factors into consideration when considering what measures to take in light of Tuesday's weather forecast.
“The majority of our buses are not air-conditioned and continuous exposure to extremely high temperatures has raised concerns about the health of our drivers and passengers,” officials said in a statement.
He noted that temperatures inside the bus rose to 115 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday and were expected to get worse on Tuesday.
