Events were held in the state in support of Israel as well as Palestine. With fighting continuing thousands of miles away, this is an emotional and difficult time for many.
On Tuesday at the University College campus in Storrs, people shared their concerns about their loved ones in what is now Israel.
“I know people everywhere, but nowhere is better. And when I see these things, I’m just waiting for a picture or waiting for a name I know to come out.” I think it’s just that,” said Jessica Burden, a senior at the university.
They gathered in solidarity with Israel. Another goal was to show support for students, especially those who are concerned about what is happening thousands of miles away.
“I think a big reason behind this is to have a safe space for people who have feelings about this,” said UW senior Elena Gindin.
UW President Radenka Maric issued a statement that read in part:
“It is of utmost importance that we unequivocally condemn all forms of terrorism.”
She continued: “We all share a united voice for peace in the Middle East.”
The school is providing support to students as the community deals with what it calls a “growing humanitarian disaster.”
Outside the state capitol, people rallied in support of Palestine.
“We oppose the killing of all civilians on both sides,” said Khalid al-Qadmi, a member of the Palestinian National Council.
He said he disagrees with Hamas in general. The worry is that this battle could be a long one.
“We Palestinians have been under occupation for the past 75 years,” al-Qadmi said. “The root of the problem is in the profession. We always have this problem. If we end the occupation, the resistance will end.”
