The Truman Army Educational and Personnel Testing Center at Fort Leonard Wood is hosting a week of events in honor of American Education Week, which ends Friday.
The goal this week was to “broaden people’s definition of the word ‘education,'” said Vanessa Alzavara, a guidance counselor at the center and an event organizer.
“Education is not just about going to university,” Alzabara says. “There are other aspects as well, like finances and how to budget. We also learn about physical and mental health. This week we’re just celebrating learning.”
Throughout the week, attendees, including military, civilians, veterans, and families, will learn about the many educational, workforce development, and comprehensive health services offered here, including the Military Spouse Career Acceleration Account scholarship program, Alzavara said. – Said that he had the opportunity to learn about fitness programs. , Thrift Savings Plan, Veterans Upward Bound Program, College Level Testing Program, Defense Against Standardized Testing in Non-Traditional Educational Support Subjects, and more.
Additionally, experts are on hand daily to provide helpful resume writing tips, tax filing information, warrant officer instructions, and nursing students from Lincoln University, one of the schools with a physical presence on-site, can help with blood pressure. testing has been provided, Alzabala added. During the lunch break, there will be briefings on topics such as stress, nutrition and self-care.
“We tried to think of all the things that people here would want to know or want to know,” Alzavara said.
One of the attendees at Tuesday’s briefing on micronutrition (part of the center’s “Lunch and Learn” series, so-called “Lunch and Learn” series) was Sergeant John Johnson. 1st Class John Marquis, this year’s Maneuver Support Center of Excellence Drill Sergeant of the Year.
As DSOY, Marquis is responsible for leading special programs for drill sergeants here and advocating for their needs, increasing opportunities for service members to learn about topics that can improve their health and the health of others. He said he thought that was important. their subordinates.
“This was the first class where I was taught in detail about vitamins, where they come from and how much you should take,” Marquis said. “These resources are great for drill sergeants to not only understand their own nutrition, but also to brief their trainees and make sure they understand their vitamin intake and the healthy choices they should make when eating. It’s very helpful in terms of how it helps.”
Marquis said he is currently completing a bachelor’s degree in sports and exercise science and noted the importance of what he called “being a lifelong learner.”
“Be a person who always strives to improve,” he said. “Sometimes it doesn’t correlate to what you do in the military, but you can still improve yourself. And those new skills may come in handy when leading others.” ” Education also shows that you can stick to a plan, attend class with enough discipline, and do what it takes to get there. These are skills that are developed through schools and education centres. ”
Alzabara said she hopes American Education Week will be an eye-opener for the Fort Leonard Wood community when it comes to the educational opportunities offered here.
“We just want people to know that if they have questions about going back to school or want to learn more about the workshops we offer, we are here and have resources. Or even if you just have questions, we’re here to help,” she said.
The week’s classes conclude on Friday with a warrant officer briefing at noon, followed by a substitute teacher workshop at 1 p.m. For more information about programs offered through the Truman Army Education and Personnel Testing Center, please call 573.596.0172.
